SUMMARY:LES Yearbook Presents: The Season We Share – Masks\, Collage & Love Letters to the LES
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a day of creativity and storytelling as we celebrate the Lower East Side through hands-on art activities and community memory-sharing. Design collage masks\, write love letters to the LES\, capture your creations in our photo booth\, and craft a yearbook page to be included in the Lower East Side Yearbook—a multimedia archival project created in collaboration with residents of the Lower East Side and public housing. This living archive honors the legacy of our neighborhood through photography\, inter-generational conversations\, and shared memory. Please bring photos from your personal collection—especially from holidays or community events—to be photo scanned on-site and considered for inclusion in the Yearbook. Flyers\, posters\, and other ephemera are also welcome! \nAccessibility\nMain Gallery is on the second floor of the building and is accessible via the Garden gate and an elevator. To access the elevator\, visitors should request access with patron services at the front desk and they will assist in navigating around the exterior of the building to the Garden entrance. The Garden entrance is located on Willet Street via a 200-foot pathway with a small slope to the Garden entrance.

SUMMARY:Destiny Mata Lower East Side Yearbook: A Living Archive
DESCRIPTION:The Lower East Side Yearbook is an archival photo and storytelling project led by New York City photographer Destiny Mata about Lower East Side public housing residents and the importance of community memory. In this exhibition\, Mata’s photographs of her beloved neighborhood are presented alongside photos from the albums of Lower East Side residents Camille Napoleon\, Promise Jimenez\, Cheryl Kiwan\, Aicha Cheriff\, and TC Rosario\, which were collected through a community-wide open call. \nCurated by Ali Rosa-Salas. Exhibition design by Anzia Anderson. \nAbout Destiny Mata\nDestiny Mata is a Mexican American photographer and filmmaker based in her native New York City\, focusing on subculture and community. She comes from a family of photographers. Her grandfather was a part-time wedding photographer\, her aunt Chayo\, a fashion photographer\, and her mother documented family moments\, instilling in her the power of photography from an early age. Mata found her voice as a photographer capturing live music\, the everyday life of her Lower East Side neighborhood\, and stories of home. Her work explores themes of gentrification\, housing rights\, and the underground NYC punks of color music scene. \n\n\nMata studied photojournalism at LaGuardia Community College and San Antonio College\, before serving as Director of Photography Programs at the Lower Eastside Girls Club from 2017-2019. Her work has been exhibited widely\, including La Vida En Loisaida: Life on the Lower East Side at Photoville Festival Presented by: Abrons Art Center (2020) and her recent solo exhibition PULSE at Transmitter Gallery (2024). Mata has been published in The Nation “Behind The Doors of Public Housing” and The Culture Crush published her first book The Way We Were dedicated to NYC punks of color. She is a recipient of the Magnum Foundation Fellowship (2023)\, the WORTHLESS Studios Residency (2022)\, the Magnum Foundation US Dispatches Grant (2020)\, and this year awarded the En Foco Artist Fellowship. Rooted in the Lower East Side\, Mata continues to preserve and celebrate her community through collaborative storytelling.
